IPL Photofacial

Target sun damage, pigmentation, redness, and broken capillaries for a brighter, more even complexion.

IPL photofacial treatment for sun damage and pigmentation at Oak City MedAesthetics in Raleigh, NC

What Is an IPL Photofacial?

An IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photofacial is a non-invasive light-based treatment that delivers broad-spectrum light energy into the deeper layers of your skin. Unlike lasers that use a single wavelength, IPL emits multiple wavelengths that selectively target pigmented and vascular lesions beneath the surface. It breaks down excess melanin and constricts damaged blood vessels without harming the surrounding tissue. The result: a clearer, more even complexion with visibly reduced sun damage, age spots, hyperpigmentation, redness, rosacea, and broken capillaries.

Treatments are quick. Most sessions take just 20-30 minutes depending on the area, and downtime is minimal. You can return to your daily routine right after. For the best results, we recommend a series of 3-5 treatments spaced about four weeks apart. Each session builds on the last, progressively clearing pigmentation and reducing redness.

At Oak City MedAesthetics, Sarah Walker, FNP-C, performs all IPL photofacial treatments at our North Raleigh studio. IPL is one of our most requested services, and we're thrilled to now offer it to clients across North Raleigh, Wake Forest, and the Triangle. During your complimentary consultation, Sarah will evaluate your skin, discuss your goals, and create a treatment plan built around you.

What IPL Treats

Sun Damage & Age Spots

Brown spots, sun spots, and freckling caused by years of UV exposure. IPL breaks down the excess melanin responsible for these pigmented lesions, allowing your body to naturally clear them for a more even skin tone.

Redness & Rosacea

Diffuse redness, persistent flushing, and rosacea-related discoloration respond exceptionally well to IPL. The light energy targets hemoglobin in dilated blood vessels, reducing overall redness and calming reactive skin.

Vascular Lesions

Broken capillaries, spider veins, and visible blood vessels on the face and chest are effectively treated with IPL. The light energy causes damaged vessels to constrict and gradually fade from view.

Uneven Skin Tone

Overall complexion brightening and tone correction for skin that looks dull, blotchy, or uneven. IPL stimulates cellular renewal and clears surface-level discoloration, revealing fresher, more radiant skin beneath.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

IPL works best on lighter to medium skin tones, generally Fitzpatrick skin types I through IV. The light energy needs contrast between the pigment in the skin concern (a brown spot, a red vessel) and the surrounding skin. That's why IPL isn't ideal for very dark skin tones or heavily tanned skin. If you've been spending a lot of time in the sun or recently used a tanning bed, we'll ask you to wait a couple of weeks before starting treatment.

Beyond skin tone, IPL is a great fit if you're dealing with sun damage, stubborn redness, rosacea, or broken capillaries that just won't quit. If you've spent years in the North Raleigh sun and your skin shows it, this treatment was basically made for you. Freckling across the cheeks, blotchy patches on the chest, tiny spider veins around the nose. IPL handles all of it really well.

Not sure if you're a good candidate? That's exactly what the complimentary consultation is for. Sarah will evaluate your skin tone, your concerns, and your goals. She'll let you know honestly if IPL is the right move or if another treatment might serve you better. We recently launched IPL at our studio on Falls of Neuse Road. What to Expect

Every IPL photofacial starts with a complimentary consultation. Sarah evaluates your skin, discusses your concerns, and determines if IPL is the right treatment for your goals and skin type. Once a plan is in place, treatments can typically begin at your next visit.

Each session takes about 20-30 minutes depending on the treatment area. During the procedure, you'll feel a sensation similar to a light snap of a rubber band against the skin. Brief and very tolerable. You'll wear protective eyewear throughout, and a cooling gel keeps you comfortable.

After your session, you may notice mild redness that typically fades within 24-48 hours. Pigmented spots often darken initially before naturally flaking off over 7-10 days, revealing clearer skin beneath. There's no real downtime. Most clients return to their normal activities immediately. For the best results, we recommend 3-5 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart, with sun protection between treatments.
